Bile Slat & Pigments – Urine

The Bile Salts and Pigments urine test is a diagnostic screening used to identify the presence of bile components such as bilirubin and urobilinogen in the urine. These substances are typically processed by the liver and excreted in bile. When liver function is impaired—as seen in hepatitis, obstructive jaundice, or liver cirrhosis—these pigments can spill into the bloodstream and be excreted through urine. Their presence in urine often indicates liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or hemolytic conditions. The test is commonly used in conjunction with liver function tests to evaluate the severity and nature of liver or biliary disease.
