VDRL Test

The VDRL test is a screening test for syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It detects non-specific antibodies (reagin antibodies) produced by the body in response to the infection. The test is performed on blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is commonly used for initial screening. A positive result may indicate an active or past syphilis infection, but since the test can yield false positives in conditions like pregnancy, viral infections, or autoimmune diseases, it is usually followed by a confirmatory test such as FTA-ABS or TPHA. The VDRL test is important for early detection and prevention of complications related to untreated syphilis.
