Serum Amylase

Serum Amylase is a diagnostic blood test that measures the amount of the enzyme amylase, which is primarily produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. Amylase plays a key role in the digestion of carbohydrates. Elevated levels of serum amylase are often associated with acute pancreatitis, pancreatic duct obstruction, or other pancreatic conditions. Lower-than-normal levels may suggest chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic insufficiency. This test helps in evaluating symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, and fever, and is often ordered alongside lipase for a more accurate assessment of pancreatic health.
